as much as, in modern days, it has become increasingly difficult to pin things down to a specific genre this release brings very defined genres but also a refreshing feature, a constant change of energy in one single track, and most importantly, it all comes with this modern feel to it which indicates it is the new generation rising making justice to what ultrastretch stands for, surfacing fresh and new talents. signed by austrian duo foehn & jerome. the a side is of the ep consists of the genius idea that it is a relatively simple track, however, with the feel that so much is happening, the type when you listen to a loop but one you can listen to forever and not get tired of it, always the best sign. a rolling and constant bassline makes it into a super fat and rounded dancefloor groover, while on top you have these fragments of chopped up vocal samples in and out creating a sense of confusion, a mind drilling element is then complemented by very loose and fine hihats floating around. on the b side starts with quirky minimal track with a galloping kick throughout, when the open hihats slam in with a vocal it quickly develops into a very happy and playful housy vibe and just when you are riding, the clap slams in now on a tighter hat sequence followed by the break and rebuilding, when it comes back however it adds another element changing the energy yet again, through introducing a synthline. the quirky frog sounding noises throughout certainly makes it a super witty track overall.

at a recent gig in macedonia, he played an incredible “live pure data” set, using real-time graphical data flow programming to create all his own sounds. with this huge wealth of knowledge and a hard drive stacked with unreleased productions, his ‘spookz ep’ is long overdue. he describes his music as industropical or funkyndustrial and when you hear his two original cuts on this ep, these descriptions become more apparent. ‘spookz’ is dappled and harmonious with sweeping electronics and in-depth grooves. ‘prance for me’ is atmospheric and quaking in its deliverance, showing all his innovation and creativity. the ep comes with two stellar remixes. the first is by el prevost who delivers a grinding reworking of ‘prance for me’. el prevost has been forging his sound over the last decade, gradually shifting into the house and techno scene in particular for uk label, third ear and his most recent self-run label, no speakers, which boasts a varied artist roster that includes doorly, red rack em, wbeeza, 65d mavericks and gabbi lopez. rommek’s remix of ‘spookz’ follows and shows why this recently emerging artist is fast becoming a definitive force on the techno scene. fellow loose lips collective member, rommek made his production debut on weekend circuit, before joining james ruskin’s iconic blueprint label who released his ‘moth hole ep’, plus an appearance on their 20th anniversary compilation, ‘structures and solutions’ gaining him an admirable reputation for textured sound designs.

during the last ice age glaciers slowly carved away the landscape creating mineral rich sediment. for hundreds of thousands of years melt water carried this fine-grained sediment downstream to parts of north america. in some areas strong winds carried this sediment and deposited it forming a network of ridges and dunes. these deposits of loose silty wind-blown, or aeolian, sediment are called loess. flash forward to the present, and the duo of clay emerson and ian pullman may seem to have gone the way of the glaciers and all but disappeared. instead, their signature loose aural silt has been slowly and methodically accumulating and now makes up their new full-length pocosin. others may have no point of reference and pocosin is a welcome introduction to the sound of loess, in a mere blink of an eye from when they began.

mohammed al harbiti, adam stromstedt and flord king s lyssna records is now on its third release, and the label is beginning to pick up jus the right sort of momentum to make a impact on the vast, bottomless pit that is the deep house scene. what you need to be able to do that is plenty of style and a fresh way of constructing 4/4 patterns, something which levi verspeek has clearly nailed on the opening 256. peshka s miracle is also refreshingly off-kilter, meandering its loose drums over a hazy bed of washed-up sonics, while flord king s steff off uses the minimal formula to deliver its mesmerising glow, and adam stromstedts hm 2016 is probably the best example of traditional deep house that we ve heard since the close of that treacherous 2016. quality house escapades.

we continue the orb’s sin in space remix ep series with a third volume focussing on the duo’s latest full-length, the highly acclaimed cow / chill out, world! new kid felix leifur made quiet a stir with his debut release on dirt crew last year. the icelandic juggernaut comes from the striving reykjavik music scene and is working closely with the lagaffe tales guys on building a new northern house empire. since his debut hes been working hard on creating a more varied vision of his unique lo slung hip hop approach to house music. with this ep he offers six new outings that have one thing in common, very warm and moody sounds ranging from disco through jazz and hip hop. were certain that he will continue to further cement his name in the coming years and were looking forward to working with him on plenty of exciting projects. opening with eyelids, felix delivers a rough, deep and dark house cut with broken beats, warped piano loops and twisted sampling throughout. classy has a smoky jazz feeling, kept tight with clever beat programming while evolving around a catchy sax motif. our personal fav is the title track, in general, a stunning broken beat house jam, smooth and loose, with swirling keys and a funk flavoured bass. the b-side begins with midwinter, a dance floor gem on a straight up junket. its deep, forward moving and bass driven, much like his track feels like that featured on our deep love compilation in 2016. yet another highlight for us is apollo, theres not many records out there that sound quite like this, thoroughly warped and contorted, depraved strings and a hypnotising rhodes arc and strain until the bass drops and it all falls in place psychedelic beauty! he closes with mine, a dope lo fi hip hop beat that casually wraps our ears, an ice cold soul infused piece.

originally founded by kisk back in 2009 apparel music set out to offer something truly singular in focusing their musical output predominately on jazz whilst venturing into its integration across the landscape of electronic music at the time.with a zealous release schedule, they racked up a healthy collection of eps between 2010-2015 from artists such as delano smith, scsi-9, sarp yilmaz and the label owner himself amongst many others. now after a year-long hiatus, the label makes a return with a slick 4-track va that fans both old and new will relish. strictly limited to a pressing of 200 on 180 grams of wax, their re-launch brings with it a jazz-suffused 4-track record featuring voyeur, ivano tetelepta & eugeÌne latumeten, kisk and kerem akdag. voyeurs swinging for theo kicks things off with organic, brushed drums and a walking bass line set off to a tight, swaying rhythm. glassy rhodes keys bleed into the mix ahead of piano stabs and 909 hats that propel progress when combined with a thickened low-end. ivano tetelepta & eugeine latumeten follow up with je suis reconnaissant a bass-heavy groove that lays soulful vocal samples over filtered piano chords and loose-limbed hat patterns. kisks just u then drives a crackly drum loop through distant, flexing synth tones. arresting vocal samples then take the foreground in a rich, smokey mix before istanbuls kerem akdags closes up the package. akin to the styles of producers such as henry wu and max graef, akdags friend melds playful drum patterns with thick chord stabs and smooth vocal lines that wrap up a stellar return for apparel music.

claudio casalini s best record label does a fine job of reissuing funk, disco and other curios from the mists of time, and so it goes with this wonderful slice of loose and live soul jazz. grupo almendra hailed from venezuela, and they released their sole album almendra in 1978 in a whirlwind of latin american musicality and it had been consigned to relative obscurity. whichever digger was lucky enough to discover this gem must have been very pleased indeed, for the quality of the music and the production is nothing short of remarkable, while the remastering has respectfully revived the sweet, soulful sound of grupo almendra.

savage grounds return to lux rec for the third time, with their third record. atrocities comes after unpleasant music for unpleasant people, released in 2015, and over fences, 2014. it is, as much as the previous 2, the result of investigations in music, live, composed with a minimum amount of instruments. the duo, comprised of cco and daniele cosmo, worked with a roland 606, a roland 909 and a modular synthesiser. experimenting with fm modulation and loose sequences. the result is concrete noise, anger, ghostly voices, and above all, the sheer conscience of human failures. atrocities marks number 30 in the lux rec catalogue. it comes as a 12inch + 7inch package.

landing straight after 415-pr10, public releases first in a loose series of san francisco-centric compilations, this three-track 12inch is a further exploration of the bay areas sounds and aesthetics, though here its explored via remixes produced by friends from abroad. the a-side is a complete overhaul, reimagining, and extension of anonstops seaside by thee loving hand, tim goldsworthys solo moniker of choice these days. the ex-dfa records co-founder and former member of unkle took the tunes balearic foundation and used it as a bed for what one might mistake as a lost arthur russell cut from the world of echo era. joel wells lent his airy, light, sweet vocals to the track, while darren morris added synth work to bolster tim’s usual production genius. it’s carefree and emotive, the aural equivalent of a big, toothy smile. the flip features a mix thats a whole helluva lot more intense and uptempo, though no less positive than its original. chidas remix of domination is squarer and housier than beziers piece, which was glitzy classic disco dunked in italo, but enough of it remains to be unmistakably a spinoff. fiery and propulsive in the way a gulfstream jet is, its a ball of thunder that will electrify any set, any dance floor.

greek label lower parts is back with a cinematic new ep from athenean artist ioannis savvaidis. influenced by his love of old school computer programming, all four tracks are live jams made with classic yamaha machinery from the nineties. form start to finish this is an absorbing ambient release that transports the listener into the world of science fiction. gently unfolding and expanding in all directions, savvaidis invites you to cut loose and get lost in your own mind. some are tracks darker and more foreboding, some are airy and heavenly, but all together the ep acts as a movie lived out in the mind.

berlin duo mat.joe pair really know how to cook up a storm and once again theyprove that in style with a pair of firing new tracks for their home label mother recordings. it comes after releases on labels like hot trax and gruuv recordings and again brims with fresh grooves that will be a fine addition to any set. strawz opens the account in loose limbed house fashion. silky drums bobble up anddown and retro stabs and chattering claps add bite to the beats. a heavily treatedvocal pings about and clever effects help build tension before the whole thing dropsinto a fat house kicker. on the flip, synthphony pops off like corn, with cyclical drums and moreretro stabs urging you to dance. a tinny vocal is stitched into the arrangement andkeeps you on edge as loopy bass cuts in and out. firing and well produced, this ismore dance floor dynamite for all.

marathons began innocently, as a quick debut ep by an energetic swedish duo we found on soundcloud. within a couple months of chatting with the pair, artur bra&#776,,ndstrom and egil kahlbom, however, we realized our collaboration wasn t going to be simple, so cut and dry, so straightforward, and that s why we find ourselves here, a year after meeting them with a full album, not an in-and-out single, on our hands. what made it complex and intricate, you ask? why d we opt to squeeze eight originals into one long-player, you wonder? well, artur and egil are prolific dudes with fantastic ears and formidable work ethics. a couple of demos quickly sprouted offspring and became four, then six, then ten. rather than fight the arbitrary desire to trim the spread down to a 12inch, we figured we d aim higher and work on a proper album. what we constructed is, in a very classic sense, a long-player. here s that album! it s a sunny, loose, limber, uninhibited boogie through warm disco cuts and wobbly house jams and soulful funk slices. daytime chill-out with a nightclub architecture—or peak hour mayhem with a bright, clearheaded euphoria. marathons swings every which way and suits any mood, so drop that needle and try it on. then repeat, repeat, repeat.
